Fall beers and more!

Lovers of fall and full-bodied beer rejoice! We've got a lot of great new beers on tap, in bottles, and coming up including:

  • Drunkin Nunkin, the bourbon-barrel-aged version of our spiced "no pumpkin" ale. The sweetness of the bourbon really makes this something special for the fall.
  • Inscrutable Drupe, our lacto peach/nectarine sour beer is a delightfully fruity and easy-drinking sour.
  • Cash Rules Everything Around Me (C.R.E.A.M.) Ale is our take on this classic American style of beer, complete with a little nod to Wu-Tang in the name. Plus we've got plans for some fruit variations on this beer coming up!
  • Toaster, our 4th anniversary Imperial Stout, that we also brewed on the 5th anniversary of our 4th anniversary is back in bottles in time for our 12th anniversary. Everybody got it? Whew. Anyway, it's a great beer.
  • Snow Melt returns in November! And for the Pittsburgh Brewtal Beer Fest, we're collaborating with band Natural Causes for an exclusive Snow Melt Your Face Off version that adds hot pepper heat to the bourbon-barrel-aged version of Snow Melt! We'll also have a regular bourbon-barrel-aged Snow Melt coming soon. Stay tuned!

And one of our crowd favorites is returning this Saturday! Black Strap Stout, brewed with molasses and brown sugar, is going on tap and we're hosting a hard-rocking party to celebrate this heavy-hitter. Our friends from Onion Maiden will be here from 1-5pm serving vegetarian/vegan food and we'll be playing punk rock tunes. Come get your stout on and invite your friends!

Trivia nights continue on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, but now we've got a new food vendor lined up: our pals at PGH Po'Boy! We first met Ben when we were both selling at the Pittsburgh Public Market and it's awesome to see him turn his truck into one of the best in the city! Check out PGH Po'Boy and trivia on October 5 and 19, starting at 7pm!

Sunday, October 23 Beer Belly Yoga is back in the Brewery and it's a great way to stretch out and relax...plus have a beer with your fellow yoga pals when you're done!

It's early to think about the holiday season, we know, but if you're looking for a space to host that holiday party, maybe somewhere that lets you bring in your own food, doesn't charge crazy catering fees, and has lots of GOOD BEER...might we suggest US?! Both our Brewery and Taproom are open for special events, and the Taproom can be used for private events Monday-Wednesday nights! Email us (events@eastendbrewing.com) for more info!

We're fully committed: Bourbon Barrel Aged Nunkin goes on tap tomorrow!

We're fully committed: Bourbon Barrel Aged Nunkin goes on tap tomorrow!

Lotsa hate out there for pumpkin beers this year. I suppose some of it is warranted. And the pumpkin-everything craze may have jumped the gourd last year. But we're still sticking to our firmly held ideals here, as we prepare to release this year's BigPour Brew... even if those ideals don't involve actual pumpkins.

In case you don't know the back story on our Nunkin Ale, here's the excerpt from our very first release of this beer that we did for the 2011 SteelCity BigPour.

So for this year's BigPour Brew, we've committed 100% of this year's Nunkin Ale to bourbon barrels for aging. (Yes, we started thinking about this beer 11 months ago!) And we're really VERY happy with what came out. The malt, the spice, the whiskey... they all play so nicely together, like a warm slice of pie after dinner with a glass of something strong to sip on.

BBA Nunkin, or "Drunken Nunkin" as we have come to call it here, will go on tap tomorrow at the BigPour, about halfway through each session. And of course for those of you not attending the fest, we'll also have it on tap at BOTH our locations on Saturday as well.

Back to School!

Back to School!

Lots of GOOD BEER news and events to cover! First and foremost, we just revamped the BEERS page on our website to get rid of beers that we haven't brewed in, three or four years?and added a WHOLE BUNCH of the new beers we've been pumping out lately! Educate yourself (see... Back to School!) or view our handy-dandy YEAR IN BEER calendar here for our brewing schedule at a glance!

We'll be debuting a new beer at Big Pour this year (more on that later), a Bourbon Barrel Aged version of our Nunkin spiced ale, and look for a lacto-soured beer with fresh nectarines comine soon! But right now we're excited about how great our Big Hop Harvest Ale tastes this year; it's always a little different depending on those fresh hops, so to celebrate we're throwing a party this Saturday!

Join us for the Crafts & Drafts Record Hop complete with six different vintage vinyl sellers, food & ice cream, crafts with Handmade Arcade, and gig posters! All that plus a free sample of Big Hop Harvest...see you Saturday!

And then because we don't like taking any time off, on Tuesday September 6 we're tapping our special brew created just for Britsburgh, a six day festival of all things British here in Pittsburgh!. Come try our Britsburgh Ale or ask for it on draft around town! We're tapping a cask at 6pm!

It's almost time for Big Pour on September 10, one of our favorite events of the year, to benefit the great folks at Construction Junction. Learn more here!

There's a bunch of other great events happening too; our trivia nights on the first & third Wednesdays are more popular than ever! Join us Sep 7 & 21 and get here early for a seat!

On Saturday, September 10 we're pleased to be part of a fortuitously named album release party by the band Eastend Mile, with a tap takeover at James Street. On Thursday September 15 we're hosting a special Thursday Pub Quiz edition for the ACLU's Constitution Day! Saturday, September 17 we'll be pouring beer as part of the Greater Pittsburgh Literary Council's Search and Sip in the Strip. Sunday, September 25 Beer Belly Yoga is back! Get your tickets now! And we're rounding out the month with another Poetry & Pints on Friday, Sep 30.

And now for a different type of event: Have you thought about hosting a private event, or looking for a private place to have some GOOD BEER with some GOOD FRIENDS or BUSINESS ASSOCIATES? Our Taproom in the strip is closed to the public Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, which means it's OPEN for private events! Email Nordy at events@eastendbrewing.com and we can talk about setting up a private event in our brand-new Taproom!

We'll close with something to look forward to: we're working with 412 Food Rescue & TRASH homebrewers on a bread beer that should be coming out in the Fall, with all the proceeds going to benefit this great organization that saves unused food and delivers it to people in need. You'll be able to help by doing something you love...buying our beer!

Summertime Funtime!

Summertime Funtime!

So much happening at East End this month! We're having a blast at our new Taproom in the Strip District, and we hope you're enjoying it too! As for new beers, we've got Five Teeth Short of A Smile, a Kentucky Common Ale that won the TRASH Homebrewers award, on tap now plus our Smokestack Porter, StrawbeRye, and a bourbon barrel-aged version of our Steelcut Oatmeal Stout.

So many events! We're starting the month off on Saturday, August 6 with the Steel City Pizzafest at the Brewpub AND a simultaneous bottle release of Wheat Hop and Moonstomp Berliner Weisse. Both bottles will be available at the Brewpub in Larimer and the Taproom in the strip. The craziness that is Pizzafest, featuring 8 different pizzerias and 4 bands, is only at the Brewpub on Saturday from 12-6pm. Dinner is coming!

We're also loving how popular our trivia nights are at the Brewpub! They happen the first and third Wednesday of event month, August 3 and 17th! Get a team together & win some great prizes! And Thursday, August 11 we're hosting a fun Reclaimed Wood art class with Pop Craft, check out this link for more info.

Saturday, August 20 from 12-5pm our friends from the Pittsburgh Vintage Mixer are back for another pop-up show! Come out for multiple vintage vendors, music, and food from Proper Pizza Mobile Oven. And that night we're proud to be part of a Farmer's Fork dinner with Frankferd Farms and food from Franktuary! That's a lot of "F's!"

We've got some great ongoing events at the Brewery too. Have you been on a tour yet? You get a full Grains-to-Glass tour where you can sample the grains and see the hops that go into our beer, taste four of our brews, and get a $15 voucher for beers or merch! This month there are tours on August 13 and 27. We're also doing Beer Belly Yoga on August 28, which is a 45 min class in the Brewpub, followed by a free glass filled with your choice of beverage and a token for a free class at I Am Yoga in Squirrel Hill. Get tickets here!  And our ongoing Poetry & Pints series continues on August 26, 6:30-8pm, featuring readings and discussion.

And looking forward to Labor Day weekend, Crafts & Drafts is back at the Brewery on September 3, 12-5pm! This time it's a vintage vinyl & music "Record Hop" to celebrate the release of Big Hop Harvest, one of our favorite beers of the year. We make it with fresh, local hops for a limited time only. Come get a free sample, shop for records or screenprinted gig posters, make a record spin art with Handmade Arcade, or get some food with PGH Po' Boy, La Palapa, and Millie's Homemade Ice Cream. It's free and family friendly!

Strip District Taproom Update... what's the deal here?!? It's been like FOREVER!

I had originally written out a loooong post here, describing all of the things that have kept us from opening our doors for the last couple of months, but honestly, why focus on a time when we couldn't serve you beer in The Strip? Because those days are soon to be LONG GONE!

Yes! It's time to open our doors... and speaking of time, our hours will be:

  • THU 11-8p
  • FRI 11-10pm
  • SAT 9-10pm
  • SUN 9-8pm

We'll keep 12 beers on tap here (1 nitro, 11 regular draft), and we'll offer sampler flights, pints, Growlers, and Crowlers. Plus all the comforts of home... if you lived in a Taproom with 12 beers on tap.

We've gone through a few iterations of different possibilities here, but ultimately decided that our focus should be where it's always been: FRESH. LOCAL. BEER.

That means we'll be BYOFood, allowing you to draw from the SIGNIFICANT culinary options that the greater Strip District has to offer. ...And in time, food the providers from other parts of this building!

That all said, we're still planning on putting on a regular Sunday Beer Brunch about every week with Eliza's Oven. Just not this first weekend. We've got a bit too much on our plates right now, if you know what I mean. :)

So, who's ready for a beer this FRIDAY???

Our three #PCBW Collaboration Brews...

Our three #PCBW Collaboration Brews...

We somehow ended up participating in the brewing of THREE Collaboration Beers for this year's Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. Why three? Why not! A chance to conspire with other talented brewers is not only a lot of fun, but a great way to learn new stuff, play with weird ingredients, and brew on some different equipment too. Here's the rundown of this year's conspiracies:

  • LATE NIGHT MILD: English Dark Mild Ale, dark, light bodied, roasty, and a VERY sessionable 3.6% abv, brewed at EEBC with Daren Szakelyhidi.

Since just about everyone here at EEBC has been a home brewer at some time in their lives, it's makes complete sense that every year, we brew a special beer in conjunction with T.R.A.S.H., the Three Rivers Alliance of Serious Homebrewers. The winner of the "Sessionable Beer" award goes to the highest ranked beer in their competition that 4.5% abv or less. And this past year, Daren Szakelyhidi took the top honors with his Late Night Mild, so we had him out to help us make a nice big batch of it.

  • Citra-Mac: A Belgian Ale late-hopped with Citra and brewed with locally foraged Staghorn Sumac "berries", 6.7% abv, brewed at EEBC with Four Seasons Brewing Co.

Sumac is a spice used in middle eastern cooking and teas, and it NOT the same plant that gives you a rash. It brings a wonderful fruity tartness and lovely pinkish color to this medium bodied , belgian base beer.

  • Passionate Embrace...uncomfortable silence: A hoppy Saison brewed with passion fruit, 6% abv, brewed at GristHouse Brewing Co. with Roundabout Brewery and EEBC.

Certain hop varieties can provide wonderful tropical fruit flavors and aromas in beer. Actual tropical fruit can do this too. We (as a group) decided that a nice, dry saison might be the perfect canvas on which to paint this particular picture for you.

Kegs of ALL THREE of these beers will be making their way around town in the weeks ahead. If you'd like to get a keg of either of the first two, drop us a line. (Talk to GristHouse about landing some of the Passionate Embrace.)

But if you;d just like to taste your way through all three, you can do that here at the Brewery starting on FRIDAY APRIL 15th! In fact, we're cooking up a whole bunch of #PCBW events all week long!

A new spot for us in The Strip!

A new spot for us in The Strip!

As you may have heard, the Pgh Public Market will cease operations at 2401 Penn Ave at the end of February 2016... that's THIS MONTH! But fear not GOOD BEER Fans. For a while now, we've been working on a way to keep the GOOD BEER flowing in the Strip District, and we're finally ready to share the details. But first, let's make one thing super clear:

Yes, rumors of our death have been greatly exaggerated. Whew! Ok, with that out of the way, here the news...

East End Brewery Taproom horizontal.jpg

Yesterday afternoon, we signed a lease for 102 19th Street in the Strip's "Pennsylvania Building". It's here that some time in the next month or two, we hope to open the doors on a place we'll be calling... the EAST END BREWERY TAPROOM.

Inside you'll find all the trappings of a REAL TAPROOM, where you can pull up a stool and enjoy a pint from the 12 we have on tap, pick out one of our latest big bottle releases, grab a six pack of BigHop cans, or (of course!) get a few Growlers filled to go. And just like at the Public Market, you'll be able to enjoy a bite to eat. Yes, we'll be serving FOOD on the weekends, in the form of a Beer Brunch. (Hello Beermosas!!!) (edit 6/8/2016)

As you can see, we're already pretty close to being ready for you, but there's still a bit of work to do inside and out to make it our own. A big part of that work is getting the okay from our PLCB pals in Harrisburg to start pouring beer. Even with the permitting work, we're hoping to open next month: As in March.

Update 6/7/2016: So close yet so far for so very many weeks now... we are doing everything we can to get a mid-June opening to happen here. Probably softly at first, and then with a Big Fussy Grand Opening when we're ready. Please stay tuned, and thank you for your patience!

So yeah, calling it a "Growler Shop" just didn't seem right since this is quite a step up for us. And for that big step, we have ALL OF YOU and your thirsty support to thank. THANKS!!!

While I'd have a hard time saying that either of the two Public Market locations have been perfect, overall it's been a great home and an important growth step for our little Brewery. It's allowed us to be a part of The Strip District, Pittsburgh's unique, diverse, vibrant, and food-centric marketplace... and a neighborhood that continues to evolve and grow at an incredible pace.

For now, you'll still find us pouring pints and filling Growlers at 2401 Penn (Update: the old location is now closed), while you dream of the Sunday Morning Beermosas to come when the new place is ready. See you soon!

Reuse is our favorite word

Reuse is our favorite word

Okay, I guess BEER is probably our favorite word. But REUSE is a close second.

We've been threatening to put in a proper entrance at the Brewery since we moved in over three years ago. After numerous design concepts, considerations, improvements, refinements, drawings, construction bids, further refinements, more improvements, and a whole bunch of permitting, we're finally ready to open the new doors for you to use... TONIGHT!

We wouldn't have been able to make any of this hang together without the support of our neighbors (and GOOD BEER Fans) down the block, at AE Works. Be sure to knock on their door if you're ready to hatch a new scheme!

And yes, before you even ask the question, I can assure you that an actual sign is part of this project. That will be going up just as soon as we can get a few days of weather warm enough to put some paint on the wall. I SWEAR, IT'S TRUE! #showmeasign

The last details of the entrance have come together wonderfully, and my favorite part of it - aside from the fact that we now have our first window - yes, actual daylight in the taproom! ...my favorite part is the materials we were able to incorporate into the design.

The big heavy sliding doors were a Construction Junction pickup that also happens to match the doors that are the front of our bar, gifted to us when we moved in by our GOOD FRIEND and master craftsman, Craig Marcus of Marcus Studio, down the street, when he was taking them out of his building.

And of course the wooden barrel staves that make up the vertical portion of our railing are from barrels that we previously used to age some of our beer. If you count the fact that these once held whiskey and our use of them as tables in our taproom, this is actually their FOURTH use. And we'll even had enough left over barrels to crank out a few matching adirondack chairs to put in the Beer Garden this Spring. Pretty cool, eh?

Comfort and Joy Department update:

Comfort and Joy Department update:

It's that time of year, when you're scrambling to find that perfect something for that special someone in your life. Well, we've got LOTS of special somethings to go around - liquid and non liquid gifts for all the naughty and nice boys and girls out there (assuming these boys and girls are of suitable drinking age).

Here's a quick rundown of some of our more special holiday offerings, for your shopping pleasure:

The 12 Crowlers of Christmas:

It's hard to pick beer for someone else, so here's the solution... one of each of the 12 beers we have on tap! Even better than last year's 12 Growlers of Christmas, the 12 CROWLERS of Christmas comes in air-tight, light-proof, fresh-filled BIG 32oz CANS, with a nice long shelf life. That way, there's less concern about pushing through the whole set before the beer starts to lose its luster, Holidays are for RELAXING over a few beers, not stressing over them, right?

12 cans, 32oz each, filled fresh while you wait, from each of our 12 taps. $80+tax, Brewery location only. No substitutions please.

Big Bottle Variety Pack:

How cool would it be to land a 12 pack of big bottles spanning a HUGE range of beer styles, all at once? It'd be like landing an instant beer cellar for that "gotta have one of everything" beer loving somebody in your life. The contents of these cases include some otherwise long sold out rarities like Brett Hop, Sketchy, and Bourbon Barrel Aged Gratitude. And like the 12 Crowlers of Christmas, you'll save a few bucks in the process.  Limited availability, only 7 cases remaining in stock as of today, split between our two locations.

Fresh New Wearable GOOD BEER Gear:

The screen printing and embroidery elves have been working overtime on some SPIFFY new Brewery Apparel to outfit the GOOD BEER Fan in your life. We've got 2 new styles of Workshirts in stock ($40), 2 new styles of PLAY  shirts ($45), a couple new tshirt designs ($15), cozy EEBC hoodies in black or green ($40), and a bunch of new knit beanies ($14) displayed here in weird beanie-wreath form. We'll be getting these all up on our webstore soon, but for now, you'll have to come see us to land some of these beauties.

Don't forget! Your BEER needs a new outfit too:

I know you've been eyeballing our Stainless Steel Vacuum Bottle style Growlers for months now. And we've just landed a new style of these amazing containers for you to load up with your favorite beer...to empty later. And don't worry, it'll stay cold for up to 12 hours sitting in the hottest of cars, at the height of summer's heat. I'm mean, I don't recommend treating your beer (OUR BEER) so carelessly as a rule, but sometimes things happen... and for those times, THE TANK Growler is here for you.

Available in any color you want, as long as it's green... $40+tax.

Beer Belly Yoga Classes, Brewery Tours, Tickets to the GOOD WOOD Fest...

If a Brewery EXPERIENCE is more of what you have in mind for that GOOD BEER Fan in your life, we've got no shortage of those in our EVENTS calendar, so feel free to click on through and snatch up some tickets while you can!

Don't worry too much about picking a date that will work. As long as we've got 48 hours of advanced notice before an event, we can easily swap you (our your gift recipient) out to a different date.

We've taken measures to put the ultimate safety net in place for you this beer-shopping season... The EEBC GIFT CARD. When you're all out of ideas, but you are absolutely POSITIVE that they love beer!

Or just bring them in for a couple pints. Your time together is the best gift of all...and just think how much of it you've already spent reading this!

Happy Shopping, and Happy Holidays!
