Big Hop Harvest Ale 2006...it's finally time!

It's late August/early September, so that means the summer sun is putting the finishing touches on one of its finest creations of the year. No, I'm not talking about your tan...(It can't be all about you EVERY time now, can it?) It's HOP HARVEST TIME!

About this time of year, I like to take your year-round favorite BIG HOP IPA, and do something really special with it to celebrate the September hop harvest. It's the Boujelais Nouveau of Beer - something that can only be brewed when the hops are fresh-picked from the vine...and that time is NOW. In this brief window of a couple days, I can get these wonderful fresh-picked, undried, green, local hops to toss into the kettle. These “wet hops” bring a wonderfully unique flavor and aroma to the beer, almost like the smell of freshly cut grass – if your lawn was completely planted with American hops!

Since this was THE MOST POPULAR BEER I made in 2005, I'm squeezing out a bit more this year to make sure everyone has a chance to get their hands on some... because like summer, it'll all be gone soon. With any luck, it will hit the tanks August 30th! Hop heads, consider yourselves warned.

Cheers - Scott

hey scott.

any chance you could post of few picks of the hops when they arrive??

i'd offer you some off my cascade bine but i doubt that the 50 or so i have on my first year vine will cut it. And since my nugget bine barely even broke ground....

Pictures coming...

You bet! Pics WILL be posted here. I've slowly been putting up the photos from last year's run, but have hit a couple of technical snags. It's going to be a busy couple of brew days - making TWICE the amount of beer in the same two day time slot... Hops wait for no one!

didn't see the pics from

Sounds great! Who is your source for local hops?

Not quite so local as it turns out...
s  A  &

Well, I've just learned that the vines (actually, I've read they are really called "bines") at my local source, www.SilverWheelFarm.com have not yielded anything this second season, which is not entirely unexpected. I'm needing to look at hops from the once massive growing regions of New York - and as a last resort, shipped overnight all the way from Washington State like I did last year. I'll know more in a few days.

UPDATE HERE: Hops came from New York State, a farm that also grows organic produce: Pedersen Farms. Paste this into your browser for more info about them: http://www.pedersenfarms.com/
