From the Mt. Lebanon Public Library events page:
Join us for a pre-“Brews for a Chili Night” event where Scott Smith, a Mt. Lebanon resident and father of two, will talk about craft beer and how he turned his hobby into a career by founding East End Brewing 11 years ago. He will also serve samples to people attending the event, open to adults 21 and up.
Smith pursued a corporate career at Clorox Co. for more than a decade after earnings his degree in mechanical engineering. At home, he taught himself to make beer. Then, in his late 30s, he chucked his corporate job and risked the family savings on an investment in used brewing equipment. Initially, he was the only employee, his brewery was in a marginal neighborhood, and his sign was a piece of cardboard stuck to the door with duct tape. Now East End’s Big Hop, Snow Melt, Fat Gary and other beers are among the best-known craft brews in the Pittsburgh region.
Smith will explain how he built up his business and provide an introduction to brewing. As Scott explains the differences between lagers, India pale ales, porters, stouts and other beers, audience members will have the chance to taste for themselves the beers distinctive qualities. He will also take questions.
